OVAL SPACE - DUMMY JIM Film 25/11/13 7pm

by Kathryn Burgess

With a perfect disregard for genre, artist filmmaker Matt Hulse explores the tale of deaf cyclist James Duthie, who set off solo for Morocco in 1951 and hit the Arctic Circle instead. This startling film – made for both deaf and hearing audiences – features an impressive layering of time and location.

Fiction, documentary, animation and archive work with an unconventional soundtrack to adapt the curious memoirs of 'Dummy Jim' 12 years in the making, Hulse composes a fond, sincere portrait of Duthie and his home community, with present-day village inhabitants emerging as creative participants – offering a well-crafted memorial to a quietly determined maverick, and the community that shaped him. Deaf actor Samuel Dore leads.” (Geneva International Film Festival).
